She wakes up in a hospital bed, confused and disoriented. The last thing she remembers is stumbling into surgery, and then…nothing. She has no memory of what happened after that. The nurses tell her she fainted and fell, but she’s not sure.
As she begins to piece together what happened, she realizes that her injury is more severe than she thought. Her skin is burnt and raw, and there’s a large, gaping hole in her chest where her heart used to be. She’s in a lot of pain, but she’s not sure how much longer she’ll be able to survive.
As she rests in bed, she contemplates her life and her future. She was always a fast learner, but now…she doesn’t know if she’ll be able to recover. She’s never been very lucky, and she doesn’t know if her luck will hold out this time.
In the darkness, she starts to hear whispers. They sound like they’re coming from the shadows, but she can’t see anything. She’s scared, but she presses on, trying to ignore the voices.
Finally, she falls asleep. When she wakes up again, she’s relieved to see that the whispers have stopped. But as she starts to get up, she realizes that she’s not alone in the room anymore. There are people in uniforms, watching her every move.
